Does anybody have any idea about going home through Hong Kong, for example, visiting Beijing? Since Hong Kong is now part of China but still more or lessly "protected" in some way, what kind of documents are required and what is the schedule of Beijing-Hong Kong express? How much does the trip (round trip) cost? Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: RE:Go Home through Hong Kong I don't think there is any change after July 1st. I just back China through H.K. this Feb. If you still hold Chinese passport and don't plan to stay over a week in H.K., you don't need any other document or visa (bring your green card w/ you). The r/t ticket depends on the reason. I normally paid $700 - 800 from eastern coast to H.K. (then I used ground transportation back mainland). I am glad to answer your further questions if you have any.

Subject: RE:RE:Go Home through Hong Kong It is much more expensive now than Feb. I bought an one way ticket for my dad from DC to Hong Kong in July and it was $670.

Subject: RE:RE:RE:Go Home through Hong Kong I agree with you. It's high season now. As I know, the low season (to Asia) is between Nov. and Dec. Of course, I don't count the promotion. For example, in Feb. of last year, r/t ticket from DC to H.K. is $520 (one way from H.K. is $420). As we all know, there is not much difference between one way and r/t ticket. Also, the price depends on the departure and back (r/t) time. I paid $50 extra for weekends of departure last time. In the other hand, you also may not get good deal. I can give you a number: 1-800-878-2828 and you can ask for Wendy (She is Chinese). I found she always gave me the lowest price after several times of comparison. Of course, she is very busy (good business). She works for Gateway Travel agency in Dollas, TX. Any other good resource is welcome (everyone want to save money, right?).

Subject: RE:RE:RE:RE:Go Home through Hong Kong M. Cai, Thanks for the information. It seems cheaper and easier to travel through H. K. than anyother way. Last year about Christmas time I got a Japan Airline r/t ticket for my Mom to travel between Beijing and Atlanta through Tokyo. It costed me $980, and my Mom had to stay in Tokyo overnight (free Hotel). Do you know anything about the Hong Kong-Beijing Express? Thanks for the information of Gateway Tavel Agency. We are also using Gateway in Atlanta. They are the most efficient travel agencies.

Subject: RE:Go Home through Hong Kong I don't know the Express between Beijing and H.K. I only know there is express train between Beijing and Shenzeng now but I don't know the schedule.I want to make one thing clearly here. The actual cost is similar if your final destination is Beijing because you have to add the cost between H.K. and Beijing. The only advantage is you can visit H.K. "by the way". In addition, if you plan to fly to Beijing from H.K., you have to light your luggage. That is domestic flight. You'll get heavy fines if your luggage is over 20 kg. My parents live in Guangzhou. That's why I go through H.K. every time. Anyway, you can check travel agency about the price and schedule. Oh, I was told different agencies would give you different prices even they work for the same agent! That's why I gave her name here and I still use her after I move down to Atlanta. You can compare by yourself (I never try the gateway travel here). Good luck and have a nice trip!

Subject: A call for reunion responses Even though no postings (except for our crab/turtle sales friend) were made after Tan Yunzhou's quest for going to BeiDa for the PKU centennial reunion, there have been lots of phone calles and talks about a class reunion here in the States. So far (as I know), there are at least 10 people (in both coasts) are interested in the idea. We all hope the list will grow. The east coast group is much ahead into the details and are calling for a vote for a resort place which compromises on traveling expenses for all of us. They have proposed to make this some type of a group vacation and set it in a major vacation resort in the States. After all, we are sort of a family or community or something... and we do care for each other's lifes, don't we? As of the time, it could coincides with the actual centennial celebration, or it could simply be around that time. A long weekend (for people without as much vacation times), spring breaks (for friends with kids), or ... whatever you feel appropriate. Ok, don't be bashful, post your opinion or call your closest friends. The east coast group is headed by Larry and Qiao Ying and the west coast has not yet clearified the issue. Tan Yunzhou is never tired of the subject, email her. :-) Zhang Li and Fang Jin are activists, too. I really think it will be an exciting event.

Subject: RE:A call for reunion responses Thank you guys' effort. It's a real good idea. However, it's still difficult actually especially for those having small kids. Liu Gang w/ his family visits Atlanta area this week. We just had a small reunion in Ning Xin's house last Sat. We did had a good time At the same time, the kids interrupted our conversation often (there are 8 boys and girls from 1 to 6 years old!). I cannot imagine what happens when the size of reunion is 5 to 10 times larger. Just like Daycare Center? I just talked w/ Ning Xin. He suggested we could have an internet conference first as a warm-up. I think it's worth to try. By the way, I think it's better having a plan (i.e., how many people, how long, where, and when) first . Then, everyone can give his or her own suggestion/question/comment on this plan. Finally (you can set a deadline), someone like Larry can revise the plan based on the inputs and put on the board again.

Subject: RE:A call for reunion responses It's a great idea to have a class-wide reunion sometime next year. In the mean while, even we all are physically limited to geographical locations, we can somehow get together around the computer and do an electronic conference. That way we can get the dialog started and warm up to the physical reunion. All we need would be to set up a time, evenings? weekends ? and advance notice. Yang is well positioned to do that. I hope there is enough enthusiam out there to convince Yang it's not a bad idea.

I will let you know when it is ready and we can talk about setting a time then. At the meanwhile, there is always AOL's chat rooms, I don't know how many of us have access to that? Still, a internet conference is limited to friends with easy access to the connections... How about scan in some local reunion photos and quench the thirst for now? Either send me the photo or give me the URL location of your scans?

Subject: FORWARD REPORT I RECEIVED THIS REPORT TODAY. I THINK MAYBE SOMEBODY ELSE ALSO HAVE INTERESTED ON IT.
Subject: report on the Beida Centennial Celebration
May 13, 1998
Dear fellow Beida Alumna/us:
How are you? Hope you had a wonderful time during the centennial weekend, either in Beijing or here in the U.S. The Centennial Celebration hosted by our APA in Harvard-Yenching Institute was a great success. Hope you all enjoyed it.
I just returned from Beijing. As many people have asked and I can't answer it one by one, here I just share some of my experiences and feelings last week in our alma mater, and report to you about a few things related to our APA.
The Centennial Celebration in Beida was absolutely spectacular. The University granted a five-day holiday for everyone to celebrate the Centennial. The campus was beautifully decorated. At night, the lighting on the Tower and around the Noname lake made it much prettier than the First Night in Boston. There were so many people everywhere in the campus. Generations and generations of alumni gathered in the campus. The news media were also everywhere in the campus. Each department had a registration desk. Each return alumna/us registered at the desk and received a welcome package, which includes a name badge with her/his department and class, a handbook for all the celebration activities, and some little gift from the department. Besides the the Centennial Celebration, each department had its own celebration activities to mark its anniversary. For example, the Physics Department celebrated her 85th anniversary. Each department also arranged reunions for each class. So there were literally more than thousand class reunions. Imagine all these happen simultaneously! I don't know the official number. But the population in campus was up by at least a decade. It was so crowded in and around Beida that Beijing police blocked the traffic around the campus. If you took a taxi to come to Beida, you had to be stopped far away and walk to the campus. People were taking pictures everywhere. The hotest spot is the class reunion picture taken in front of the New Library. There were so many people that you really had to wait for a long time to take a group picture.
BTW, do you remember a name of any road in campus that you walked so many times? Can't remember? Well, no surprise, because they had no names then. Now they are all named. All the road signs were put up just a few days before the Centennial.
From the celebration ceremony in the Great Hall to the celebration party in JingYuan, everything is well organized. In the morning of May 4, a motorcade of over 100 big bus marched from Beida to the Great Hall. All the traffic was stopped for the motorcade to pass. So the motorcade did not stop for a single time and arrived the Great Hall in less than 30 minutes. Imagine that in today's Beijing where traffic jam is everywhere, especially in the Monday morning traffic hour! The centennial party that night was a spectacular extravaganza. Both events were televised live by CCTV. At the same time, there were over hundred celebration activities in campus. The Beida history exhibition and the exhibition of gifts presented by alumni around the world (ours is among them) are two of the must seen. During the centennial week, you can use cash in the student dining hall so all the return alumni could enjoy the food there. The food was delicious and the price was unbeatable :)
The Centennial Celebration was really a once-in-a-life-time experience. I certainly will remember it at long as I live. Everywhere, everyone was smiling, so happy and so excited. Beida's Centennial was the topic not only in Beijing, it's the topic of the whole country. TV and newspapers carry it everyday. People talk about it everywhere.
Well, this message is getting too long now. Let me just tell you a few things
related to our APA. There was a meeting of all Beida alumni associations around
the world, hosted by the University officials on May 3. I reported on the
meeting that we were having a big celebration party here simultaneously and I
read our congratulatory telegram. Our gift to Beida - a Paul Revere Liberty Bowl
- was presented to Beida in a ceremony held in front of the new Beida Library
and it is now on permanent display in the exhibition hall on the first floor of
the new Library. Our gift is very nice and unique that it drew a lot of
attention. CCTV made a special interview and filmed our gift and asked about our
APA. Also, a Beida alumni association of north America was established on May 3.
I will inform you more details later. I also delivered all the donation checks
to Beida Education Foundation. The Foundation told me that each donor will
receive a official receipt soon. The donation certificate will be mailed to you
at a later time. All donors' name will be printed in a special issue of the
University Journal and in the Centennial Album. Donors who give over 10,000 yuan
will have their names inscribed on the Centennial Monument. The location of the
Centennial Monument has not been decided yet. But it probably will be in front
of the Peking University Centennial Memorial Hall (location of the old big
dining hall - Da4 Fan4 Ting1) which is still under construction. There will be
2200 seats in the Memorial Hall. Beida is now calling for seat donation. Each
participant can donate one and only one seat in his/her own name. A bronze plate
with donor's name inscribed on will be embedded at the back of each seat, as a
mark and thanks for the donors. The donation is $400 per seat. For more details,
please view the Beida Education Foundation Home page at Our Alma Mater has enter her second century now. The Official theme of the
Centennial Celebration is to make Peking University the first rate University in
the world in the 21st Century. And Beida hopes all her alumni will help to
achieve this goal. As Beida Ren, let's do our best to to make this happen!
Thank you!
Your fellow alumnus,
Zhao Ping, Physics 77

Subject: Teaching our children Chinese I don't know if anybody interested talking about teaching our children Chinese. My daughter speaks perfect Chinese. I can't say I expect her to read and write that well although she is going to Chinese school on Sundays. Some people say their kids can't speak Chinese well or won't speak Chinese at all. They talk in English at home. My daugher is in Kingergarten now. When she started daycare about two years ago, no doubt, she had trouble speaking English. Sure I helped. I tought her what to say when she needs to go to bathroom and other few words to make friends ONLY. Within two months, she was fluent in English. I intend to have her to speak Chinese at home. I figure, a little bit of effort now may do some good for her in the future. I have no intention to hurt anybody's feeling by suggesting teaching our kids Chinese. I know lots of ABC don't even understand Chinese. I am as busy as anybody else. I see her less than two hours at evening before she goes to bed during the week. Within this two hours, I need to cook, clean, wash up the kids and send them to bed. I actually have very little time with her. I am trying to do my best. I hope a lot of you support me. Welcome your idea. Thanks

Subject: RE:Teaching our children Chinese You did very good job! As I understand, every Chinese parent wishes his/her kid(s) can understand Chinese. But, it's a very tough job. Chinese is too complicated. Even to myself, I agree my Chinese is quite poor. I agree with you. I hope my kids can speak Chinese. That's it. But, this lowest requirement also is hardly achieved. Chinese has more than thousnds of dialogue. For example, I have to teach my kids Cantonese (useful when I bring them back Guangzhou) and Mandarinese (with most other Chinese). I can tell you a real story for the learning Chinese. I have a pair good friends parented a daughter and a son. the girl can speak good Chinese because she was around 14 when she left China. Her brother almost couldn't speak Chinese when I left DC three year ago even his parents forced him to use Chinese at home. Very surprisingly, when I visited this family last year, I found this boy (21 years now) could speak good Chinese then. The reason? His parents told me he was in love and his girlfriend coms from Taiwan!! Well, well, like old Chinese say: "the force of love"! Conclusion???, obviously, you guys should know what you shold do in the future.

Subject: Teach our children Chinese The reason I wrote that was a friend of ours moved here from CA. His wife and 3-year old daughter are still in CA. Before he found a place to live he stayed in my house for a week. He called his wife and daughter daily. He had to speak English with his daughter. I felt very sad. She is only three. Naturally, she should be able to speak both language without any trouble. She should not reject Chinese at all. I belive parents played very important role. Some one's argument is "my child started daycare early". My respons is "So what?"

Subject: RE:Teach our children Chinese Ching-fei: I like your raising this provocative subject, and hope we may have better understanding among ourselves through exchanges like this. I have great respect for people who could instil our language and culture to our children. but at the same time, I'd feel guity if I force feed my children things they really have difficulty taking in. My children don't speak chinese right now, I hope they'd pick it up later. I think it really depends on the child's language ability. Paula (she is 7)is a gifted child in letters, art, and music, but she has trouble with spoken language. In a way, she doesn't speak English as well as her 4 year old sister, so it could be a real burden on her to impose another language demand. My thought is, it's all in the genes. While some child may be fluent in multiple tonges, others may be limited. We may blame the parent for not trying to teach hard enough, or we may just as well blame them for not having passed the right genes. Sometimes I comfort myself in the thought that the children raised in this country, even they speak good chinese, will not be taken as "real chinese" back in China anyway, just like we speak English, but we'd never be taken as American.

Subject: Disney World We came back from our vacation at Disney World. It was wonderful. We were very tired. My five year-old daughter didn't want to come back. She claims that she likes her "new home at Disney World better." The baby didn't like there at all. He didn't care about "Micky" or fireworks. He wants his own bed to get some sleep. He wouldn't fall asleep in his stroller or car seat. When he got very tired, he took a 15min nap on our back in a back carrier. The whole trip made him very exausted. He slept all day on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after we came back. His babysitter said he appeared to be so happy back to his old routine. I guess my last topic must be too serious to us. I apologize. I just want to initiate a "conversation" so we can talk. Li Yu called me a couple of weeks ago. She said none of us in the US came back to the PKU centennial celebration last May (which we already knew). I know we all have very busy schedule: work, kids, house. I didn't go myself even I gave such a big speech about going back a year ago. I still feel very sorry that I couldn't go. Actually, I am not planning to go back to China in the near future. I experienced enough taking a eleven-month old on a plane for two hours. I can't imagine how can I survive for a 12 to 16 hour trip. I might have to sell one of the kids before the trip ended. Jusk kidding! Hope all of you have a good Thanksgiving!

Subject: RE:Disney World I don't think you should feel guilt about PKU centennial. It wasted time and money. You should see a lot of reports how the govenment wastes your donated money and other people's money during the celebration. It is purely politic game and nothing else. The "PKU Spirit" is mentioned all the time. But, in active, nothing matches. Maybe, you already knew, in most recent survey, QingHua is the most favorable university not Beida in China. Everyone should know the reason. I just backed from Guangzho two weeks ago. The long distance travel is really challenge for small kids but not terribly. My daughter is less than 6-month old in my last trip to China. By the way, I saw Zhu, Jun and Niu, Heng in Guangzhou and we had a good time. I wish I can arrange some time next trip to visit Beijing. We have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I want to thank Ning, Xin to arrange a party in his house and we have a small reunion for the friends in Atlanta area and from Research Triangle, NC. We did had a enjoyable time.

Subject: Re-union party I am going to hold a re-union party at my house located between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington DC. I would like to invide everyone in this area or outside this area to come to my party. The party is on Jan. 1, 1999. In case I don't call you personally to invite you (I am afraid I don't have everyone's phone number), I would like you to know that I do want you and your family to be there. Cai, MingXiang is right, we should have got together much earlier. My fault! Please contact me @ 410-558-4305 (work) or 410-531-0675 (Home) tell me that you will come or give me somebody else's phone number. I will fax you the map. Thank you very much!
