Our re-union went great! The attendees were Zhang, Li; Zhang, Huizhen and her husband and son; Li, Xuxiang; Wang, Zhili and wife and two children; Xia, Bing and wife. Just a thought, may be we can get together again in the summer. Either memorial day (end of May) or July 4th. We can have a crab feast! Any question? Any suggestion? Again, everyone is welcome! Without the cold weather effects, more people should be able to come, I hope! Have a great new year, everyone!

Subject: Internet Phone Chingfei Chen, you should discuss this tech w/ those guys in CA. There are some new devices, cost around hundreds, to provide long distance service through Internet but w/o this delay problem. Currently, it requires you buy the device by pairs, one is attached on your phone and another is attached on the phone of another side. Very soon (or already available), you only need to buy one for your phone then you can call the whole world for free. If your daughter will stay in China more than several months, this investment is worth.

Subject: Cab and so on Chingfei Chen, I recommand you take cab when you have to go to NY city. I'd like take cab other than drive there thought the cab is not neat. It's terrible to drive and very very expensive to park. I don't think USA is an unsafe place unless you live in the bad area. I am not rich but still can afford to live some better area. Peachtree City, the place I live, was the most safety city in USA in a survery of two years ago. So far, I have no trouble when I don't lock or forget to lock the doors. You may have no experience what means unsafety. You may ask Wei Cunmei what the situation in Guangzhou a few years ago. There is no place you can call safe unlike here, you have a choice. I used to live in the bad area in DC for a year. I don't think it was much worse that that in Guangzhou, at least, several years ago. My parents-in-law visit us and stay w/ us recently. They are used to lock the doors anytime and still wonder how unsafe of our glass doors. As to work, it's nonsense. If it'd been not for money or there had been enough money, most of people, at least, I would quit the current job. I think it's common sense: to spend more time and enjoy the life w/ family & friends and to do what you want to do not what you have to do. Tan Yunzhou, talking about money, you may be right. Subject: Discrimination I want to know which race/which country has no discrimination. Let's talk about Chinese/China. What's most of people in Beijing think about Blacks? If a girl or your daughter dates w/ a black, what's your feeling and what do you/your friends say? You guys should agree this's not only Whites' problem. Even between Whites, there is the same problem. The wars in Europe is an example. You should also agree USA is one of best country because American is a "mixed pot". Almost no one is "original". I believe the main problem here is education and country background. Chingfei Chen, do you know which group is most dangderous in DC area? You may know, Blacks may be in the 3rd places. AS to N.Y. city, I don't know where you were living. Maybe, I don't go to many big cities. But, NY is only one place I saw the double parallel parking, parking in the side walk and drive on the side walk. The parking price? It's also I only see in USA, $12 for a half hour (I don't think it's the highest). Even in DC, you may park for a whole day w/ this money. Here is a joke. A rich man drives a nice car to a bank in NY. He gives the key to the bank manager and say: "I need $5000 load for a week and you can hold my car". The manager sees the car at least worth ten times than the money, so lend him the money. This guy backs after a week and returns the money plus the interests (i.e. 20% or 30%). The manager is wonding and ask: "Sir, I don't think you have finance problem w/ this small amount of money. Could you tell me why?". The guy smiles: "Could you find a place to park my car with this price, also more safety than to park it here?"

Subject: Parking Someone who grew up in New York City told me a trick of parking in New York City: Flat your tire then have it repaired in a garage. This way you can park your car in a safe place for a day for a small amount of money. I had never tried it though. The last time we were in New York City was September 1996. We took my dad there for a tour. I believe we parked our car a few blocks away from the Greyhound station at 42nd street and took the subway. Subject: RE:Good/Bad? I don't enjoy the argument here just like the life in Beida. I just tell the true and my feelings. By the way, I used to live in HuaZhong Science & Tech. Univ. (Wuhan) and graduated from associate High School there. I worked in Zhongshan Univ. after graduated from Beida. The living conditions and equip. of both places were much better but the teachers, thought my parents worked there(Huazhong), I don't think so. The reason I picked Beida not HuaZhong was to have a chance to visit Beijing (for the similar reason: to have a chance to visit other places in the world, I came here). I always agree, I am not a good student. Anyway, as I mentioned, I will be out of this topic. How about some jokes? They are real stories about Beida. 1. at the the summer of 1980, I went to home for summer time. A guy sat near me on the train said he went to Beijing for a meeting to make education guides. He didn't go to sleeping cart(he went to there very soon late) because he had to leave earlier. He asked: "you look like a student, which school?" I replied: "Beida". "Beida?". "Oh, Beijing Univ." Subject: RE:Re-union party The party went OK (I think). There were total of 64 people coming (including all the kids). Since it was raining all day Sunday here, we had to BBQ in the garage and kept everyone in the house. 16 people from "Mechanics 79" and 10 from "Chemistry 79". The attendants were: Xu Rongfang, Song Xiaoqing, Fang Jin, Zhang Huizhen, Qiao Ying/Zhang Yongliang, Zhang Lanhui, Guan Fuyu, Gai Feng. I hope everyone had a good time. In four years, shouldn't we again get together to celebrite our twenty-year graduation?

Subject: RE:RE:Re-union party I am sorry to leave DC area a few years ago and hopefully, I can have a chance to join you guys next time. I do like DC area (not downtown) and have a lot of friends there. Unfortunately, it's a little too far for me to drive (for my age). I just backed from Niagara Falls and met Zhang Delong there. I want to thank him for the care and nice dinner and to give me a wonderful time. He really has a nice family. It's always very nice to see old friends.

Subject: Parrot talk A guy named David received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown, with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren't expletives were, to say the least, rude. David tried hard to change the bird's attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything he could think of to try and set a good example. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird yelled back. He shook the bird and the bird just got more angry and more rude. Finally, in a moment of desperation, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawk and kick and scream. Then suddenly there was quiet. Not a sound for half a minute. David was frightened that he might have hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto David's extended arm and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I will endeavor at once to correct my behavior. I really am truly sorry and beg your forgiveness." David was astonished at the bird's change in attitude and was about to ask what had made such a dramatic change when the parrot continued, "May I ask what the chicken did?"

Subject: RE:Parrot talk I only wish kids are as easily taught as the parrot. Well, I was away for a week and missed all the parties and fireworks. No response to the 2003 party yet? I think it is a great idea. Anyone interested in working on it? If we have a 3-4 people organizing committee planning this starting now, we should be able to get good "coverage" so a lot of people can make it.

Subject: Kids Haozi, talking about kids, here are some good stuffs. My favor is the last one, how about you? ------ Teacher: Little Johnny, go to the map and find North America. Little Johnny: Here it is! Teacher: Correct. Now, class, who discovered America? Class: Little Johnny! ---- Teacher: Are you chewing gum? Little Johnny: No, I'm Little Johnny. ---- Teacher: How can one person make so many stupid mistakes in one day? Little Johnny: I get up early. ---- Teacher; Didn't you promise to behave? Little Johnny: Yes, sir. Teacher: And didn't I promise to punish you if you didn't? Little Johnny: Yes, sir, but since I broke my promise, you didn't have to keep yours. ---- Little Johnny: Teacher, would you punish me for something I didn't do? Teacher: Of course not. Little Johnny: Good, because I didn't do my homework. ---- Teacher: Why are you late? Little Johnny: Because of the sign. Teacher: What sign? Little Johnny: The one that says, "School Ahead, Go Slow. "That's what I did. ---- Teacher: I hope I didn't see you looking at Don's paper. Little Johnny: I hope you didn't either. ---- Teacher: Well, at least there's one thing I can say about your son. Father: What's that? Teacher: With grades like these, he couldn't be cheating. ---- Teacher: Johnny, give me a sentence starting with "I". Little Johnny: I is... Teacher: No, Little Johnny. Always say "I am." Little Johnny: All right. "I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

Subject: 2003 Re-union May be we should all get together at a beach or Disney world. When we are having fun the kids can have fun of their own! Work harder, in four years, we will deserve this vacation too. Or may be Las Vegas to win some money? Any other idea?

Subject: RE:RE:2003 Re-union You are very special. At least, this is my 1st time to hear HaoZi likes sandy place w/ crowded people and a lot of sunshine. Just kidding. Four years is a long time. Maybe, it's a little bit too earlier to talk about now. HaoZi is right, we may need a group of people (committee) not any single one to take care this issue. So, we may need to register as some type of 'Club' or 'Association'.

Subject: Floyd I understand that many of our fellow alumni live on Floyd's path. With the largest ever evacuation in US history underway, I wish the best of luck to all. Any one who encounter problems, please post a message here to let the others know.
BTW, Cai, I did like the one about the ninth letter. Can any one think of a form of "be" that can not be used with "I" besides "are"? All the ones I can think of (am, is, was, were, will be, etc.) can be made legit. :)

Subject: RE:Floyd Based on the news, Floyd already became a storm and will affect New England area. His effects are much smaller than what expected. I don't think any one of our classmates would/will be impacted significantly by him (no one lives in beach area of east coast). Baltimore area has a little of problems. Chen Chingfei, are you and your house OK? Of course, you can use any form of 'be' after I. Here is for 'ARE': I are a student is not correct in grammar.

Subject: RE:Significantly RE:RE:Floyd Thank goodness it was not that bad. Only a few dozen people died. Anyone has somebody they know affected by the quake in Taiwan?
Long time ago when I was in northeast Ohio, one year we had a particularly heavy snowfall. The city was closed for two days. We stayed in for quite longer because the side streets were covered for almost a week. Then after we moved to Columbus, about four years ago, one snowstorm hit us all night. I had to get up at 4 AM to get the snow (about one foot and counting) out of my driveway. After a huge struggle (driving in snow took about one hour for a normally 20 minute trip) to get to the office by 7 AM, and staying there for about one hour with about 10% of regular number of staff, all doing nothing of course, the State Trooper finally called an emergency. So I had to drive another full hour just to get home. The moral of the story? Don't work for the State. :) Pretty much everyone else goes by the city police's call. Only the State agencies have to wait for the Troopers. I like that at least I know by about 7 AM if kids' school would be canceled.

Subject: RE:RE:Significantly RE:RE:Floyd Are you talking about Floyd or Taiwan? The number you gave is too large for Floyd but too small for earthquake. I was almost hit by LA earthquake in 94 (I left 20 hours earlier). However, I did cover by the big snowfall when I arrived VA home. After several days, it spent me several hours to dig my car out. That's why I like Atlanta. Traffic? If you like to live in or near to a big city, you have to tolerate it. It's not strange to drive over a hour for 5 miles in city like NY, DC, SF, LA ... The record I hit is moving less than 1 mile in one hour w/o any accedent in Atlanta (very good weather)! The only reason is holiday. everyone gets out of office at 3 pm but policymen start to work at 4 pm. So, Xia Bing, it's not really "significant". Are you guys' house okay? I saw heavy flood in NJ area. Good luck for every one!

Subject: Blizzard We moved to Maryland the end of 1995 from Texas. Within a month, we got hit by the "Blizzard of 96" in January. On the top of everyone else experienced, since we were still wearing T-shirt when we left Texas, we had no winter coats nor snow boots. I had no idea how bad the blizzard could be, I didn't even prepare enough food for it. Everywhere were closed (were you here at that time Cai?)and we had no friends either! We managed to survive after all. I guess I didn't learn the lesson. Last week when the electricity was out, I had no flash light! Luckly it was only for a very short period of time. Does anyone think we should prepare for the Y2K new year's day? May be get some kind of none electric heater?

Subject: RE:Blizzard Yes, I was still there. But, I got used to that. In '91, I experinced one night w/o heater in the similar blizzard (no electricity, the starter of heater didn't function). DC area is nice place to live and the weather is okay compared to the north/ central of US. You may need to prepare for huge temperature changes daily especially in fall. Sometimes, you may wear T-shirt at morning and need winter coat at evening. I only don't like to drive there after snow. I don't think it will be serious problem for Y2K, at least, in US. Anyway, you should prepare some wood for fireplace during the Chrestimas time, right? You shouldn't worry about the heater then.

Subject: RE:RE:Blizzard I have a gas fireplace. Last January the electricity was out for a whole day plus. The fireplace worked but without the blower (fan), it didn't really heat up much area. Since my son didn't know how to fell asleep with other people around, we still had to leave him in his cold room with plenty of blankets. (He didn't make a sound that night). So none of us stayed by the fireplace. It wasn't a good experience. That's also the reason why am I really afriad of lossing power on Y2K new year's eve.

Subject: A real story In keeping with Mingxiang's theme of telling real stories, allow me to tell this. It happened last week (9/21 to be exact).
There is this HUGH annual "Farm Science Review" where companies come to exhibit their lastest farming equipments/technologies/etc. Our agency also rents a tent to do the PR thing for the three days there. An 84 year old gentleman walked up to a female staff of ours and had a conversation which went:
... ...
Old man: "How old are you?"
Staff: "29."
Old man: "Married yet?"
Staff: "Yes."
Old man: "Got any kids?"
Staff: "No."
Old man: "Gal, you are no spring chicken! Better get started soon."
... ...
Before he left: "Go home and kiss your husband. You need to get started
tonight."

Subject: Some more jokes related to marriage I like jokes. No matter is true or not. Here are some more in my collections: Marriage is when a man and woman become as one. The trouble starts when they try to decide which one. > My wife only has 2 complaints: Nothing to wear and not enough closet space. >Maybe you heard about the man whose credit card was stolen but decided not to report it because the thief was spending less than his wife did. > How do most men define marriage? A very expensive way to get your laundry done free. > Getting married is very much like going to a restaurant with friends. > You order what you want, then when you see what the other fellow has, you wish you had ordered that. > At a cocktail party, one woman said to another, "Aren't you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?" The other replied, "Yes, I am. I married the wrong man."
