Subject: Re-union update

Our re-union went great! The attendees were Zhang, Li; Zhang, Huizhen and her husband and son; Li, Xuxiang; Wang, Zhili and wife and two children; Xia, Bing and wife. Just a thought, may be we can get together again in the summer. Either memorial day (end of May) or July 4th. We can have a crab feast! Any question? Any suggestion? Again, everyone is welcome! Without the cold weather effects, more people should be able to come, I hope! Have a great new year, everyone!

Hi every one, I still remember Chen Chingfei's message earlier this year on this board bragging how many people she could manage to gether at her year-end party. It is now my turn to show off a bit. This was a party in my home yesterday in honor of Li Xuxiang as he is running back to China soon. I had Li Xu-xiang of course, Zhang Lan-hui's family, Xia Bing's family, Gai Feng's family who recently accepted U-Penn's offer for a chemistry professor position, Guan Fuyu's family and to all your surprise, Wang Yu-xing, who is taking a two-week visit now in the East Coast. Did I count my own family yet? I really want to share this with you because it was such a wonderful and miraculous event. Zhang Yongliang

This month I come to this board everyday. My daughter is in China. I call her through internet every night after I put my son to bed. This is a good idea to use internet to call China. The only problem is there is a delay time transmitting voices. Just like you use CB radio, you have to say "over" after you finish your word and let the other side start to speaking. We have to be very patient. It sure saves us a lot of money.

Subject: Internet Phone
Chingfei Chen, you should discuss this tech w/ those guys in CA. There are
some new devices, cost around hundreds, to provide long distance service through
Internet but w/o this delay problem. Currently, it requires you buy the device
by pairs, one is attached on your phone and another is attached on the phone of
another side. Very soon (or already available), you only need to buy one for
your phone then you can call the whole world for free. If your daughter will
stay in China more than several months, this investment is worth.

I am glad and excited to see so many new messages on the board. To answer Yang Zhang's question on 7-23-99, I am, er, a homemaker. During the winter Detroit here was very cold outside. But summer time now is quite pleasant. My son, one and a half years old, dragged my laptop computer down to the floor and broke it. It had not been working until today. Now it is fixed. I can read messages again. Mingxiang Cai, thanks for remembering that I was in class 3. I remember all of you guys and gals, too, as if it was only four or five years ago. I wondered how differently everyone would be like.

Hong Zhu, what do you mean homemaker? Builder or kind of contractor? Thank
you to bring someone back to this page. I am glad you enjoy the life in Detroit.
I was only in that city once for a conf and I didn't feel good except the cheap
taxi. Maybe, I only stayed for a short time and not in a good area (The hotel
was located near the convention center). Just like those guys don't like
Atlanta. Downtown area is occupied by our black brothers. Tan Yunzhou, You
reminder me, I may call him tonight. Thank you for your kindly invitation. I may
try to arrange some time next year to visit west coast. I visited Bay Area 3
times recent years. Unfortunately, no one trip was more than three days. The
shortest one was less than 20 hours (round-trip red-eye). I have not much to say
about S.F. Only things in my mind are good food (both taste and price), clean
ChineTown (compared to other places), heavy traffic and expensive house, gas,
mm, almost everything. Until now, I still wonder how you guys can afford the
house. You guys must be very rich. Oh, one more advantage: short time and lower
cost to back China or to Hawaii. I do need vacations! Have a nice weekends,
everyone!

My twenty month old son (today)is also very excited about computer. He would climb up on my lap and push my hand away and start hitting the keyboard. That is why I have to put him to bed before I can get on the computer. The other day, I was vacuuming the house, before I knew it, he was standing on the top of the desk. Luckly, except messing up some switches, he hasn't made any big trouble yet. Last week, he suddenly decided to open his mouth and say a few words. His babysitter got very excited. To me, this boy is extreamly active. To the babysitter, he is so good and easy to be taken care of compare with all her three grandsons. BTW, my daughter comes back in two weeks. This four-weeks trip is already too much for me. (I miss her too much). She will be back to start first grade.

Cai Mingxiang, I am glad to see your message. I do not build houses. I wish I could. Homemaker means not working outside. Or homemaker means housewife. It seems you have been in Detroit downtown area and you did not like it there. I am not blaming you. To me those areas are scaring. I live in suburb area. I am so happy to know that your 20 mo. son begains to talk, Chingfei. My 18 mo. son has not said any meaningful words yet. I am hoping he will begin to call daddy or mama before he is 2 years old.

Zhu Hong, you mean housekeeper then. Anyway, to build a house is not difficult. In Ga, it's not neccessary to have a license as a builder. I saw my house was built start from scratch and I /w my wife designed the house. No one believes this is our first house. It's almost prefect, even the builder and his designer agreed. I am working on finishing my basement now. It takes time but doable. One of my neighbors, from England, told me he w/ his brothers built a log house in Alabama in four months a few years ago (he is a network application developer). He said it's easy if you go ahead to do it. I very like Nike's ads: JUST DO IT! As to Detroit Texi, I think it's maybe unique in USA (I didn't take taxi in many cities but did in N.Y. City, DC, Atlanta, which has more than 70% population of black brother/sister), there is the bullet-pretected glass between front and rear seats. Not too old guy like me must seat in the rear. You can pay through a special window. The driver safety factor is much higher than that in Guangzhou. You can think about what's your feeling when you seat in the Texi, especially, at evening/night. Just like in Atlanta, I always tell my friends, don't go to downtown area after sunset if it's not a must (like I had to pickup Xuxiang at the station at 10:30 pm).

Although I had never taken a cab anythere (including China). I know what is like in big city. Two or three years ago, my sister and I had to go to downtown Baltimore Greyhound station to pick up her friend. We had to stay there for a couple of hours because her friend got off at the other station by mistake. It was scary. I had never been there since. Thanks to this friend. Her mistake led me to a suburban station which is acturally closer to my house. I was told the street where my company located is a very bad area at night. Thank God I never need to stay late. We ( I mean everyone of us) are trying to buy expensive houses in a nice neighborhood because we are worrying about what school our children go to and what kind of friends they are making. I believe who has teenagers probably worries to death. US is not a safe place to live. Seems like now everymonth there is one hate related shooting. No matter what do you think yourself, we are not first class citizen in this country. This may not happen in the "bad" area. I know this is a very difficult subject to discuss. I don't want to think about it myself. We made a choice to stay in this country, we have to survive.

Subject: Cab and so on
Chingfei Chen, I recommand you take cab when you have to go to NY city.
I'd like take cab other than drive there thought the cab is not neat. It's
terrible to drive and very very expensive to park. I don't think USA is an
unsafe place unless you live in the bad area. I am not rich but still can afford
to live some better area. Peachtree City, the place I live, was the most safety
city in USA in a survery of two years ago. So far, I have no trouble when I
don't lock or forget to lock the doors. You may have no experience what means
unsafety. You may ask Wei Cunmei what the situation in Guangzhou a few years
ago. There is no place you can call safe unlike here, you have a choice. I used
to live in the bad area in DC for a year. I don't think it was much worse that
that in Guangzhou, at least, several years ago. My parents-in-law visit us and
stay w/ us recently. They are used to lock the doors anytime and still wonder
how unsafe of our glass doors. As to work, it's nonsense. If it'd been not for
money or there had been enough money, most of people, at least, I would quit the
current job. I think it's common sense: to spend more time and enjoy the life w/
family & friends and to do what you want to do not what you have to do. Tan
Yunzhou, talking about money, you may be right. We have different standard.
Compared to millionaires, you guys may feel compiliable. I never, so far, dream
I would be a millionaire. So, compared to my level, you guys are really ...

I have lived in Rapid City, South Dakota for three years. I know what is safty. Nobody lock their cars nor their homes there. I could walk on the street in the middle of night without worry about anything. In the whole state of South Dakota, black population was about 3%. All the blacks I had seen were from foreigh country. My company has a factory in a small town of West Virginia. It is also a very small town (our plant is the largest company in town). A lot of people there has lived there for generations. I am noting saying they are not nice people. Nobody ever mistreat me. I believe grow up in little places are so narrow minded about race differences. On CNN yesterday,a white girl was interviewed. When she was asked "what do you think the childern who were hurt in this (the most recent shooting)?" She said: "What childern? Do you mean jewish children?" You can tell by her face that she never thinks jewish are human. I couldn't stand to continue watching. Personally, I don't have any problem with any white I know. But in the news, race related hate crimes, discriminations are everywhere. May be we shouldn't have to pay attention to them. I just think this is very stress issue. Those blacks may only want to take money from whoever he can get from. He doesn't care what race this person happen to be. You may get hurt if you refuse to hand over the money. But a crazy white may not. You could be killed only because you are a Chinese. I know I shouldn't even talk about this here. Believe me, I have been places: north, south and east. Big city and real small ones. I lived in New York city for two summers when I first came to this country (parking wasn't too bad then). I had never personally hurt by the discrimination. I just take it too personal when it show up in the news. I live in a very nice neighborhood, very good school district. Houses are so hot here and you simply can not find any house at the price that we bought ours 2 1/2 years ago. I can't say I am proud of it. Didn't they say the basic belief of this country is "all men are created equal"? Not in everyone's mind. I don't mean to start big discussion. Sorry about this. Just drop the subject. Same conclusion: We choose to live here, we have to survive.

I have a friend couple bought a house in the city (CA) where "Rodney King" was beat up by four white cops (it was such big news a couple of years ago). The girl was so proud of their purchase "it is a white town, people could not stand for black people." Sure, what makes her think they should accept asian? They had to move because of the reason that it is not hard to figure out. Isn't it sad?

Subject: Discrimination
I want to know which race/which country has no discrimination. Let's talk
about Chinese/China. What's most of people in Beijing think about Blacks? If a
girl or your daughter dates w/ a black, what's your feeling and what do you/your
friends say? You guys should agree this's not only Whites' problem. Even between
Whites, there is the same problem. The wars in Europe is an example. You should
also agree USA is one of best country because American is a "mixed pot". Almost
no one is "original". I believe the main problem here is education and country
background. Chingfei Chen, do you know which group is most dangderous in DC
area? You may know, Blacks may be in the 3rd places. AS to N.Y. city, I don't
know where you were living. Maybe, I don't go to many big cities. But, NY is
only one place I saw the double parallel parking, parking in the side walk and
drive on the side walk. The parking price? It's also I only see in USA, $12 for
a half hour (I don't think it's the highest). Even in DC, you may park for a
whole day w/ this money. Here is a joke. A rich man drives a nice car to a bank
in NY. He gives the key to the bank manager and say: "I need $5000 load for a
week and you can hold my car". The manager sees the car at least worth ten times
than the money, so lend him the money. This guy backs after a week and returns
the money plus the interests (i.e. 20% or 30%). The manager is wonding and ask:
"Sir, I don't think you have finance problem w/ this small amount of money.
Could you tell me why?". The guy smiles: "Could you find a place to park my car
with this price, also more safety than to park it here?"

Back in 1984 or 1985, I was working in a college in shanghai. All the black foreign students in that school had a Chinese girl friend. Even the Su Buqing's grand-daughter was involved with one of them. I was told that later on it became even more popular to date foreign students in college. Don't take me wrong. I have no opinion on this.

Someone who grew up in New York City told me a trick of parking in New
York City: Flat your tire then have it repaired in a garage. This way you can
park your car in a safe place for a day for a small amount of money. I had never
tried it though. The last time we were in New York City was September 1996. We
took my dad there for a tour. I believe we parked our car a few blocks away from
the Greyhound station at 42nd street and took the subway. I can't remember
clearly but I don't think we paid more than $36 for the daily parking.

I have four Luffa plants (dish cloth luffa, "Si Gua"). For some reason,
the vine grows everywhere but I don't have one single flower on them. One
cucumber plant right next to them is continues giving me cucumbers. They were
planted in the same kinds of soil and fertilized the same way too. I can't
believe the requirement of N/P/K ratio in the fertilizer would be so different
for these two types of plant. Any suggestion?

Go to Home Depot or similar stores where you can buy the plants and

Chen Ching-fei raised this interesting thing. Personally, my top five most
favorite places around Beida are the followings: 1) the LongMarch
Restaurant--still remember how much cash we dumped there? 2) the Hai-dian Book
Rental Store--where I rent lots of Wu-Xia novels, 3) Dining Hall #3 (top three
entries were rou(4)-bing(4), stir-fried sausage and Zhu(1)-rou(4)-pa(3)), 4)
Classroom Building #2, and 5) the old Chemistry Building. I wonder how other
people would think about their favorite things/places back to our college age

I am ashamed that I can't remember the details. The building I was talking

the head of chemistry department had more than one offices at different
building. Do not count their labs!) I vaguely remember there was one medium
sized class room at the end of some building we used to climb in to study after
all other classroom building closed at night. My favorate food was "Shao (1)
Shuang (1) Qie (2)" that was a dish with both tomato and eggplant. During the my
first week, I felt I was so lost that I had to find the bookstore first before I
could get back to my dorm room. What was the number for the Big dinning hall? I

Yang, do you like to chase the hurricanes? If yes, Denies will disappoint you this time. Otherwise, you are lucky! By thy way, there are several guys in Research Triangle Area, NC. You may have a reunion w/ those guys next time. As to BeiDa, sorry, guys, I will say almost no positive things in my memory except making some good friends there. Oh, only one thing is my real favor: the freedom. This also is the reason I came to USA. Maybe, I am not a good student. I don't think I gained a lot of my knowledges there. You guys agreed the bad food. The study environment is good? I don't think so. I only remembered you might spent a whole night to try to hunt for a seat for study and the broken glass door in the lib heppened more than once every year. Good lab equipment? I didn't think they were better than those I used in high school. The instruments I used for my thesis were 50s and 60s (thanks for Japanese quality). Most of my jobs were to MAKE the data comparable for different instruments for the same setup (it's hard to keep a same instrument runs for a few days or to finish one exp). Good teachers? you guys can count, there are only a few of them. I like computer. The most impressive thing I remembered was we couldn't have a class to learn computer because the dept didn't have money (9 Yuan/student) for the practice. Good living conditions? you guys living in Beijing might not care. You know what? I think it's real good to develop "comrade relationship". It's hard to aviod the skin contact daily. Anything else? If you guys think I talk too much, I can keep slient or move to other topics. Thanks. How about XiangZi? he should leave SF tomorrow. Say Hi to him if you have a chance and wish he has a wondful and safe trip!

I don't enjoy the argument here just like the life in Beida. I just tell
the true and my feelings. By the way, I used to live in HuaZhong Science &
Tech. Univ. (Wuhan) and graduated from associate High School there. I worked in
Zhongshan Univ. after graduated from Beida. The living conditions and equip. of
both places were much better but the teachers, thought my parents worked
there(Huazhong), I don't think so. The reason I picked Beida not HuaZhong was to
have a chance to visit Beijing (for the similar reason: to have a chance to
visit other places in the world, I came here). I always agree, I am not a good
student. Anyway, as I mentioned, I will be out of this topic. How about some
jokes? They are real stories about Beida. 1. at the the summer of 1980, I went
to home for summer time. A guy sat near me on the train said he went to Beijing
for a meeting to make education guides. He didn't go to sleeping cart(he went to
there very soon late) because he had to leave earlier. He asked: "you look like
a student, which school?" I replied: "Beida". "Beida?". "Oh, Beijing Univ." I
said. He said: "Oh, good Univ. ..mmm..(a while) Which Univ. in Beijing?" "???"
You guys can answer for me. 2. Do you guys remmber one guy from Phys80 of Beida
killed several profs and another Chinese student in Iowa? At the second day, my
prof went to the lab and talked w/ me: "... you are a real smart guy, I like to
have as many students like you and from your school .. Do you feel good here?"
"Oh, ya, thanks, do you need any help?" "Oh, no, .. I checked my files yesterday
and found you came from BEIJING UNIV., a very good Univ." "..." You see, Famous
Beida helps me to get my degree smoothly. I do like any kind of jokes. Could you
paste them here if you guys find any good one. Have a nice and safe long
weekends!

Subject: Parrot talk
A guy named David received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully
grown, with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an
expletive. Those that weren't expletives were, to say the least, rude. David
tried hard to change the bird's attitude and was constantly saying polite words,
playing soft music, anything he could think of to try and set a good example.
Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird yelled back. He shook the
bird and the bird just got more angry and more rude. Finally, in a moment of
desperation, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the
bird squawk and kick and scream. Then suddenly there was quiet. Not a sound for
half a minute. David was frightened that he might have hurt the bird and quickly
opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto David's extended arm
and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.
I will endeavor at once to correct my behavior. I really am truly sorry and beg
your forgiveness." David was astonished at the bird's change in attitude and was
about to ask what had made such a dramatic change when the parrot continued,
"May I ask what the chicken did?"

Thank goodness it was not that bad. Only a few dozen people died. Anyone
has somebody they know affected by the quake in Taiwan?

Long time ago when I was in northeast Ohio, one year we had a particularly heavy snowfall. The city was closed for two days. We stayed in for quite longer because the side streets were covered for almost a week. Then after we moved to Columbus, about four years ago, one snowstorm hit us all night. I had to get up at 4 AM to get the snow (about one foot and counting) out of my driveway. After a huge struggle (driving in snow took about one hour for a normally 20 minute trip) to get to the office by 7 AM, and staying there for about one hour with about 10% of regular number of staff, all doing nothing of course, the State Trooper finally called an emergency. So I had to drive another full hour just to get home. The moral of the story? Don't work for the State. :) Pretty much everyone else goes by the city police's call. Only the State agencies have to wait for the Troopers. I like that at least I know by about 7 AM if kids' school would be canceled.

Are you talking about Floyd or Taiwan? The number you gave is too large

(I left 20 hours earlier). However, I did cover by the big snowfall when I
arrived VA home. After several days, it spent me several hours to dig my car
out. That's why I like Atlanta. Traffic? If you like to live in or near to a big
city, you have to tolerate it. It's not strange to drive over a hour for 5 miles
in city like NY, DC, SF, LA ... The record I hit is moving less than 1 mile in
one hour w/o any accedent in Atlanta (very good weather)! The only reason is
holiday. everyone gets out of office at 3 pm but policymen start to work at 4
pm. So, Xia Bing, it's not really "significant". Are you guys' house okay? I saw

We moved to Maryland the end of 1995 from Texas. Within a month, we got

prepare enough food for it. Everywhere were closed (were you here at that time
Cai?)and we had no friends either! We managed to survive after all. I guess I
didn't learn the lesson. Last week when the electricity was out, I had no flash

Yes, I was still there. But, I got used to that. In '91, I experinced one

didn't function). DC area is nice place to live and the weather is okay compared
to the north/ central of US. You may need to prepare for huge temperature
changes daily especially in fall. Sometimes, you may wear T-shirt at morning and
need winter coat at evening. I only don't like to drive there after snow. I
don't think it will be serious problem for Y2K, at least, in US. Anyway, you

There is this HUGH annual "Farm Science Review" where companies come to exhibit their lastest farming equipments/technologies/etc. Our agency also rents a tent to do the PR thing for the three days there. An 84 year old gentleman walked up to a female staff of ours and had a conversation which went:

... ...
Old man: "How old are you?"
Staff: "29."
Old man: "Married yet?"
Staff: "Yes."
Old man: "Got any kids?"
Staff: "No."
Old man: "Gal, you are no spring chicken! Better get started soon."
... ...
Before he left: "Go home and kiss your husband. You need to get started tonight."

you see what the other fellow has, you wish you had ordered that. > At a
cocktail party, one woman said to another, "Aren't you wearing your wedding ring
on the wrong finger?" The other replied, "Yes, I am. I married the wrong man."

A doctor was having an affair with his nurse. Shortly afterward, she told him she was pregnant. Not wanting his wife to know, he gave the nurse a sum of money and asked her to go to Italy and have the baby there.
"But how will I let you know the baby is born?"she asked.
He replied, " Just send me a postcard and write "spaghetti" on the back. I'll take care of expenses."
So the nurse took the money and flew to Italy. Six months went by and then one day the doctor's wife called him at the office and said "Dear, you received a very strange postcard in the mail today from Europe, and I don't understand what it means."
The doctor said "Just wait until I get home and I will explain it to you".
Later that evening the doctor came home, read the postcard, fell to the floor with a heart attack. Paramedics rushed him to the ER. The lead medic stayed back to comfort the wife. He asked what trauma had precipitated the cardiac arrest. So the wife picked up the card and read "Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti - Two with sausage and meatballs, two without."
