(Here is a cute and clean one :)
A kindergarten teacher was observing
her classroom of children while they drew. She would occasionally walk around to
see each child's artwork. As she came to one little girl who was working
diligently, she asked what the drawing was.
The girl replied, "I'm drawing
God."
The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks
like."
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl
replied, . . . . "They will in a minute."

San Diago is my dream place for retirement. The weather is simply
wonderful and traffic is not as terrible as here. one reason, at least I think,
to live in CA (not only south) is easy to most of Chinese or Asian. Nice and
cheap food, low cost for long distance phone bill, low cost and taking less time
to back home town(country). The house is high costs but, like one of my friends
said, you can think you just invested something, and you would get return
finally. I visited serveral houses of my friends in CA, the living conditions
are much better than what I heard and expected. Compared to most of other States
in USA (middle of the States, for example), CA is a nice place. So, why not?

What do you mean by "low cost of long distance phone call"? Do they have
special long distance phone company or plan? I was just having trouble with my
phone bill today. If it wasn't this high, I probably would not have checked it.
It was too ridiculous. I just got $128.28 credit back after I called AT&T a
while ago. There is another company call Qwest switched my other line without my
permision. I hate to spend lots of time to deal with these long distance phone
companies.

Hi Chingfei, I live in San Diego. I think this place like any other place,
it has good point or bad ones too. There is no perfect place on earth according
human point of view. The main reason I like here best is the weather. It got 263
(average) sunny days a year. In the winter, the day temp. could in 70F. The
coldest night is 32F. It close to beach, (half hour drive). It has a lot tourist
attractions. It is like vacation here everyday. My son plays baseball outdoor
all yearround. The down side about to live here is the thing are expensive, the
living index is 120. People are nice but they are so busy so they are not as
polite as people of midwest, since I live in the midwest before. House is
livable but not very high quality. But it has building code to comply with the
earthquake possiblilty. The white people here are more open minded than the
people in Midwest. If you need more details, I will type more later. Thanks for
everybody read this. live in San Diego

Chingfei Chen, yes, but, for small long distance companies not AT&T or
MCI.. Also, as I mentioned before, there are several techques/devices available
in CA to use Internet service. You can get free long distance after one time
investment. AT&T and MCI have billing problems for years. However, they have
24-hour customer service and good line quanlity, which I like thought MCI's
customer service is terrible (that's why I am w/ AT&T now).

Subject: Living expense in CA
I have some information on "Median Household Income" and "Cost of living
Index" for these three cities. The "Cost of living Index" is include the 1.
4-bedroom housing 2. Transportation 3. Utiities 4. Service/Misc. and 5.
consumbales

Baltimore is where I work and Columbia is where I live.

Baltimore, MD:
Median Household Income = $26,878
Cost of Living Index = 110.77%

Columbis,MD:
Median Household Income = $56,179
Cost of Living Index = 123.71%

Los Angeles, CA
Median Household Income = $30,640
Cost of Living Index = 152.99%

I don't understand with that little of income, how the people in LA could survive with that high of living cost. Are these information true?

I know that Northern California is more expensive since all these high tech companies. And the cost of living must be extreamly high also.

Compare with the education and daycare, California isn't better than Maryland. There is a item called "Expenditures Per Pupil", LA = $5,858 and Columbia,MD= $8,226 even Baltimore,MD = $6,073.

Student/Teacher Ratio: LA 22.0 to 1; Columbia, MD 16.0 to 1 and Baltimore 21.0 to 1

I do have more information on other items. Should I believe these on paper or actually in your own experience, LA is livable place?

May be just tell me, not that bad! Thanks alot, people!

Hi Chingfei, Chen: OKay, I do not have those figures for San Diego right
now. I do not like LA because I think everywhere is farther apart. I think the
median household income in San Digeo is $83,000(about). The place in desert part
of CA is not good place to live. But I do think San Diego is good place. There
are some different school district here. The San Diego district may be has less
money per pupil , but poway district is not that bad. I think each region has
its own unique way. I do not like to say everything in CA or in San Diego is the
best. You always have to make decision about which one you want the most and
which one you do not care that much so you can miss it. I already said the there
is no perfect place here on earth. I think I finally do not have to deal with
the snow is good for me. We almost brought snowblower when I was in MN. Money is
important part in life but it can not decide everything. Sometime, even money
can not buy happiness for you. I think, if within 20 mile radius, you lkie the
environment, then you will live there happy. Also, where to live is personal
choice and the place I like best may not be the best in your eyes because we may
have different values. I think it is pointless to see which place is the best
place to live. If God ask you to live in the worst place on earth, you have to
go, right. So, Enjoy what you have now instead of counting what you do not have.
Be happy and life is short. Oh, I do not want to post my phone # here. Call me

This is pointless. I am interested in LA area because the company that
gave me an offer is located near LA. I wasn't intend to take the job first. The
only reason I went there for the interview was because I have never been to
California before (except passing through). I thought why not to take the chance
to visit that part of country. I was there the weekend of Oct. 15th (just in
time to experience the earthquake)

I got the offer yesterday. I don't know if it worth to move. I am actually very happy with my current job and the area I live. I am truly confused now. I try to make some sense out of it.

I think one of the advantage to move to LA is when we do reunion in 2003, like M. Cai suggested, in San Deigo, I wouldn't need to go far.

You are taking it all wrong. I wasn't looking for "the best place to
live". I was just trying to find myself a reason to move coast to coast. It took
me seven hours to fly there. Now think about moving the whole family, selling
the house, moving into an unknown area, temperary housing, storage, child's
schooling, daycare, etc. Besides the holiday is coming. How am I going to think
straight? No matter how wonderful the "re-location package" is (It is still

of these problems. I am just simply confused.

Chen Xin is living in LA now and you can call him to get his opinions. He
lives in LA for years. LA is not bad place if you can tolerate the air (except
winter) and earthquake. Also, do both of you and your husband get offers? If no,
you have to think about the living quality changes from double income to single
(I don't think the offer you got is double of your current's). It's hard
dicision but you have to make. Just like I moved from DC to here a few years
ago. So far, I still like both places. I like seasons although I still don't get
used to a little too much snow in DC area. The school system there (actually, VA
where I was living) is perfect and in Atlanta may be the worst (only better than
SC). By the way, DC is the 3rd from back count, only better than GA and SC. So,
the index you are using, sometimes, means nothing. Like Ye Qiu said, there is no
perfect place on the earth. I am thinking I can move back to VA after several
years if it's necessary when kids grow up (at the time they go to middle/high
school). Why not enjoy current time and stop worry about tomorrow? Everything
changes. Except God, who knows the future?

Chingfei: I have a very good friend moved from SF bayarea to LA for her
medical training. She works in downtown and lives in Orange county. She hated it
there. According to her, the quality of the population is not the best. It's
mostly business types there, not the 'academic' kind that she was used to. For
example, a lot of the mainland Chinese ended up there are not students or
scholars you normally see in most of the cities in the States. They are wifes or
kids of some higher rankings in Chinese government using the $$s and enjoying
the powers...

Wow... I am away from the board for a few days and I missed so much again.
:)

Chingfei, my sister-in-law and her family moved from Ohio to NY city to SF then ended up in LA. They are still there so there must be something good there. I myself had very low opinions of LA until this last Febuary when we visited them. (Until then I only had two visits to the Bay area.) I would not want to move there myself, but as others eluded, it indeed is a very personal thing. If you like, just drop a note in my mailbox. I will fetch her number to you or have her call you.

One thing I like about LA area (not the city itself) is the available Chinese foods there. No where else can you find the same kind of variety/convenience/price, be it grocery stores or restaurants we are talking about.

Oh, the airfare. Flying to China is so incredibly cheap if I lived there,
I may do trips once every year! Last year when I got news that Northwest had
this sale of $710 for the normally $1300 tickets, I jumped at it. It was seven
years from the last time we were back! (There were lots of other issues besides
money, of course. But the cost is hard to ignore. Add the cost inside China and
time everything by four... you get the idea.) But LA people regularly get $600
fares.

Thank you all so much. I feel a lot better now. I must sounded pretty
selfish previously. The only reason I am consider this opportunity is because
California is always my husband's dream. He could apply for internal transfer if
I decided to go. So the double income issue is taken care of.

I am, always has been, working with a small private company where my vioce is heard and my thought is counted. I can't imagine what it is going to be like to work for a big company. Or there actually other people at my same level but I have to listen to because of their seniority.

Cai: you were half way right: we all know DC is bad, Baltimore is bad by all means but some part of MD and VA are very good. I am not going to live in LA city. Probably somewhere Orange county near the Disney land.

Chingfei Chen, I don't agree w/ you about DC. DC has the facilities which
no other cities can compare like free museums (very good education for kids),
plus free administion for most famous spots such as White house, Capital Hills,
FBI... Some area like Goergetown are nice to live if you can afford. Orange
county is not good place, as most people know. Of course, you can drive a little
more like most people do (I drive 35-mile one way to work).
HaoZi, you are in
a well. Toranto is closer to you and when you get chance to visit there, you
should change your mind. Also, about the airfare, I only paid $600 (UA) from
Atlanta to Hong Kong (same as to Beijing, if my memory is correct) last Nov.
Those guys in CA pay this price at regular base. With discount? maybe, as low as
$400! You can afford to back China twice a year if you have enough
vacations.

to live. If I remember right, San Franscisco is rated the # 1 most livable city

Seattle. West coast is indeed very attractive. The quality of life and education
will depend on which neighborhood you live, and I believe every major metro

Come on, HaoZi, when you are in a big city like Toronto (the Queens of

conditions in LA are better. Besides, based on my experiences, the public
transportation system in Toronto is better (I was there serveral times either w/
or w/o car). If you were in H.K. before, you would know how similar they are. I
never have been in Vancouver (only stop in airport less than two hours). But, I
also heard that's really the 2nd H.K. (or Tokyo). I was told there are almost no
Canadian there and only Asians (Japanese and Chinese). By the way, if you are
looking for the convienence and less expensive of parking, you can come here --
Atlanta. You can park in most of parking lots (not hotels') of downtown for $5
or less per day. Do you see the park lot of anywhere else only to pay $2 for
whole day or $25 per month?

One of the interesting places I visited was the town of Jim Thorpe in the
Pensavania coal country. It is named after one of the greatest athlets of all
time, and a native American. The town is actually quite nice, with winding
streets and Victorian houses and imposing facades. The street was very quite,
you don't see too much traffic almost any time of the day. The town avoided the
doomed fate of many a small town from the industrial age by actively promoting
itself as a tourist destination. Thorpe's name helps to a certain extent. It was
a pity that Jim Thorpe, though talented and quite well known at his time, died a
broken man and couldn't even afford a burying ground. I imaging he'd feel
gratified being adopted by this loving mountain town.

raise a budgie. She is so fun. I feed her in the morning. I made a a play pen so
I put her on the play pen. Then she will call me. But I have to say bye-bye to
her. I wish she can speak one day.

Wrong Number
The
worried housewife sprang to the telephone when it rang and listened with relief
to the kindly voice in her ear.
"How are you, darling?" it said. "What kind
of a day are you having?"
"Oh, mother," said the housewife, breaking into
bitter tears, "I've had such a bad day. The baby won't eat and the washing
machine broke down. I haven't had a chance to go shopping, and besides, I've
just sprained my ankle and I have to hobble around. On top of that, the house is
a mess and I'm supposed to have two couples to dinner tonight."
The mother
was shocked and was at once all sympathy. "Oh, darling," she said, "sit down,
relax, and close your eyes. I'll be over in half an hour. I'll do your shopping,
clean up the house, and cook your dinner for you. I'll feed the baby and I'll
call a repairman I know who'll be at your house to fix the washing machine
promptly. Now stop crying. I'll do everything. In fact, I'll even call George at
the office and tell him he ought to come home and help out for once."

"George?" said the housewife. "Who's George?" "Why, George! Your husband! Is
this 223-1374?
"No, this is 223-1375."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I have
the wrong number."
There was a short pause and the housewife said, "Does
this mean you're not coming over?"

take care of the house and yards, gardens, all different activities(school,
neiborhood, company, Chinese...) plus, have to save some vacation for the trip

A young couple met with their pastor to set a date for their wedding. When
he asked whether they preferred a contemporary or a traditional service,
they
opted for the contemporary.
On the big day, a major storm forced the groom to
take an alternate route to the church. The streets were flooded, so he rolled up
his pants legs to keep his trousers dry.
When he finally reached the church,
his best man rushed him into the sanctuary and up to the altar, just as the
ceremony was starting.
"Pull down your pants," whispered the pastor.
"Uh,
Reverend, I've changed my mind," the groom responded. "I think I would prefer
the traditional service."

Congratulation! Enjoy your new girl. I found the second kid is a lot
easier than the first one. I didn't miss too much sleep with my little boy.
Another hint: without grandparent arround, you don't mind let the kid cry a
couple of minutes longer. By the way, how far apart of your two children? I
don't think your son is over three years old. It would be hard for the first

Wow, it's really taugh (I have a friend here is similar to you). You do
need grandparent(s)(Chingfei Chen was partially right) thought you may have some
taugh time later. 1st kid is always the taughest. I believe it's experience
related. Parents especially mom pay too much attention on the 1st baby (before
and after his/her born)and don't know what you should or shouldn't do. Just like
you get your 1st job or work in a new area (totally different). You cannot learn
these things from books/classes. Anyway, enjoy what you get now. Tomorrow will

Subject: Good One
One day a man comes home from work to find total mayhem at home. The kids
were outside still in their pajamas playing in the mud and muck. There were
empty food boxes and wrappers all around. As he proceeded into the house, he
found an even bigger mess. Dishes on the counter, dog food spilled on the floor,
a broken glass under the table, and a small pile of sand by the back door. The
family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing, and a lamp had
been knocked over.
He headed up the stairs, stepping over toys, to look for
his wife. He was becoming worried that she may be ill, or that something had
happened to her.
He found her in the bedroom, still in bed with her pajamas
on, reading a book.
She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went.
He looked at her bewildered and asked, "What happened here today?"
She again
smiled and answered, "You know everyday when you come home from work and ask me
what I did today?"
"Yes," was his reply.
She answered, "Well, today I
didn't do it!"

Little Johnny and his family lived in the country, and as a result seldom
had guests. He was eager to help his mother after his father appeared with two
dinner guests from the office.
When the dinner was nearly over, Little Johnny
went to the kitchen and proudly carried in the first piece of apple pie, giving
it to his father who passed it to a guest. Little Johnny came in with a second
piece of pie and gave it to his father, who again gave it to a guest.
This
